During an first day in his new role, Zohran Mamdani vowed to “transform” America's largest city, declaring “a different age” and an ambitious beginning to his tenure.

The new democratic socialist, who was a relatively obscure state assemblyman, now stands as the city's first mayor born in Africa. He also made history by being the first to be sworn in using the Islamic holy text.
